What is mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is a method in which injections are given into the superficial layers of the skin in very small doses and from a large number of points. The aim is to deliver the substance applied directly to the target tissue.

Its difference from filler lies in what it targets: filler adds volume, whereas mesotherapy is directed at supporting the quality of the tissue. It does not alter the contours of the face and does not give shape.

What does it contain?

The mixture applied varies according to the target. Components in frequent use:

  • Non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid. Unlike the form used in filler it is not of gel structure; it does not add volume, it supports the retention of moisture in the skin.
  • Vitamins, minerals and amino acids. With the aim of supporting the tissue’s own processes of production.
  • Antioxidant components.

The content of the product used, its licensing status and its suitability for the region to be treated should be discussed beforehand.

In which situations is it considered?

  • Dryness of the skin, a dull appearance and superficial fine lines
  • Loss of tissue quality related to the sun
  • Support of regions of thin skin such as the neck, the décolletage and the back of the hand
  • Support of the scalp in hair loss (hair mesotherapy)

The procedure

The procedure is carried out with fine-tipped needles after a superficial numbing cream, and generally takes 20-30 minutes.

Mesotherapy is not a treatment that gives a result in a single session; it is planned as a course of sessions. The number of sessions and the interval between them are determined according to the target and the condition of the skin. Repetition at certain intervals is required for the effect to continue.

After the procedure

The small raised areas and the redness related to the needle marks subside within a few hours; small bruises may occur in regions of thin skin.

It is advised that make-up is not worn on the same day, that the swimming pool, the sauna and heavy exercise are avoided on the day of the procedure, and that the skin is protected from the sun for a few days.

Risks

Those seen frequently are temporary: redness, tenderness, small bruises, temporary swelling at the needle sites.

Those seen more rarely: an allergic response to the substance applied, infection where the procedure is carried out under conditions that are not appropriate, temporary irregularity of the surface of the skin.

For this reason the procedure needs to be carried out under medical conditions and with products whose content and licensing status are known.

Who is it not suitable for?

Pregnancy and the period of breastfeeding, active infection or inflammatory skin disease in the region of application, known allergy to the components of the mixture, uncontrolled chronic illness and bleeding disorders are situations that prevent the procedure or cause it to be postponed.

Realistic expectations

Mesotherapy aims at a measured improvement in the quality of the skin. It does not correct sagging, it does not remove deep lines and it does not make up for loss of volume.

The scientific data in this field vary according to the mixture used and the indication; the result differs from person to person. It is important that expectation is established within this framework.

Assessment

In complaints concerning the skin the right step is to determine the source of the problem: dryness, sun damage, loss of volume and sagging require different approaches. In some people regular skin care and protection from the sun contribute more than any procedure.
